Fred Sanders

Fred Sanders is a theologian who tried to specialize in the doctrine of the Trinity, but found that everything in Christian life and thought is connected to the triune God. As a result, he studies, teaches, and writes across the full range of Christian doctrines. Since 1999, Fred has taught in the Torrey Honors College, an undergraduate program in the great books, at Biola University. and is an amateur historian of Biola's institutional history. He is co-founder of the annual Los Angeles Theology Conference, and maintains an active internet presence via Twitter and blog. Fred studied art (drawing and printmaking) in college, earned an MDiv at Asbury Theological Seminary, and a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. He blogs copiously at scriptoriumdaily.com, and maintains an active presence on Twitter.

Advancing Trinitarian Theology: Explorations in Constructive Dogmatics

Trinitarian Theology—the subject of the second annual Los Angeles Theology Conference—sought to make constructive progress in the doctrine of the Trinity by aligning the trinitarian revival with the ongoing task of retrieving the classical doctrine of the Trinity. The nine diverse essays in this collection. Each of the essays collected in this volume engage with Scripture as well as with others in the field—theologians both past and present, from different confessions—in order to provide constructive resources for contemporary systematic theology and to forge a theology for the future.

Five Views on the Extent of the Atonement

In a familiar Counterpoints format, this book explores the question of the extent of Christ’s atonement, going beyond simple Reformed vs. non-Reformed understandings. This volume elevates the conversation to a broader plane, including contributors who represent the breadth of Christian tradition. This book serves not only as a single-volume resource for engaging the views on the extent of the atonement but also as a catalyst for understanding and advancing a balanced approach to this core Christian doctrine.

Fountain of Salvation: Trinity and Soteriology

The doctrine of the Trinity begins to seem altogether irrelevant to salvation history and Christian experience, while soteriology meanwhile becomes naturalized, losing its transcendent reference. If they are connected too tightly, on the other hand, human salvation seems inherent to the divine reality itself. Deftly navigating this tension, Fountain of Salvation relates them by expounding the doctrine of eternal processions and temporal missions, ultimately showing how they inherently belong together.

How God Used R.A. Torrey: A Short Biography as Told Through His Sermons

Scholar, expositor, storyteller, and evangelist, R. A. Torrey was a master-of-all-trades minister. Crowds worldwide called his preaching “that famous Torrey thing.” Drawn from various periods of Torrey’s ministry, and prefaced with bibliographic commentary, these sermons paint a portrait of a man gripped by God. But even more they grip the reader. They take us into the great halls where God’s Word bellowed forth from Torrey and left his audiences hushed. It’s no wonder that Torrey caught the attention of the great evangelist D. L. Moody.

Reading the Christian Spiritual Classics: A Guide for Evangelicals

Ever since Richard Foster wrote Celebration of Discipline in 1978, evangelicals have hungered for a deeper and more historic spirituality. Many have come to discover the wealth of spiritual insight available in the Desert Fathers, the medieval mystics, German Pietism and other traditions. While these classics have been a source of life-changing renewal for many, still others are wary of these texts and the foreign theological traditions from which they come. The essays in this volume provide a guide for evangelicals to read the Christian spiritual classics.

Retrieving Eternal Generation

Retrieving the doctrine of eternal generation for contemporary evangelical theology calls for a multifaceted approach. Retrieving Eternal Generation addresses (1) the hermeneutical logic and biblical bases of the doctrine of eternal generation; (2) key historical figures and moments in the development of the doctrine of eternal generation; and (3) the broad dogmatic significance of the doctrine of eternal generation for theology. This book addresses both the common modern objections to the doctrine of eternal generation and presents the productive import of the doctrine for twenty-first century evangelical theology.

The Deep Things of God: How the Trinity Changes Everything – Revised Edition

Though widely taught and believed by evangelicals, the doctrine of the Trinity is rarely fully understood or celebrated. In The Deep Things of God, systematic theologian Fred Sanders offers an accesible guide to this fundamental doctrine, demonstrating why it ought to be embraced—wholeheartedly and without reserve—as a central concern of evangelical theology. This revised second edition of The Deep Things of God includes a study guide and examines the centrality of the Trinity in our salvation and the Trinity’s presence in the reading of the Bible and prayer.

The Holy Spirit: An Introduction

This product will be released on 10/03/23

In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, Fred Sanders teaches readers how to hold a proper understanding of both the person and power of the Holy Spirit, exploring his role in both the Old and New Testaments.

The Third Person of the Trinity: Explorations in Constructive Dogmatics

The Third Person of the Trinity represents the proceedings of the 2020 Los Angeles Theology Conference, which examined pneumatology as a core component of the doctrine of the Trinity, offering constructive proposals for understanding the doctrine of the Holy Spirit with theological and historical depth, ecumenical scope, and analytic clarity. There are twelve diverse essays in this collection. Each of the essays collected in this volume engage with Scripture as well as with others in the field—theologians both past and present, from different confessions—in order to provide constructive resources for contemporary systematic theology and to forge a theology for the future.

The Trinity in the Canon: A Biblical, Theological, Historical, and Practical Proposal

For the church, trinitarian theology should flow into two streams: orthodoxy and orthopraxy. Editor Brandon Smith and a stellar cast of theologians demonstrate that trinitarian theology derives directly from Scripture and should produce both right doctrine and right living. The Trinity in the Canon is an appeal for the church to incorporate the Trinity into our preaching, our liturgies and worship, and our interactions with those outside the church. Pastors, scholars, professors, students, and laypersons will benefit spiritually, theologically, and practically from this in-depth study of the Trinity.

The Triune God

In The Triune God, a volume from the New Studies in Dogmatics series, professor Fred Sanders provides a thoughtful, concise, and unconventional treatment of this often misunderstood Christian doctrine, arguing that the way in which the Trinity was revealed is central to making dogmatic conclusions. Sanders interacts with major voices from the history of doctrine, and his arguments are indebted to and informed by the great Trinitarian tradition. His approach begins with offering praise to invoke the Triune God and engages the reader in what is essentially a spiritual exercise.
