Bulletin of Ecclesial Theology, Volume 8.2: Forgiveness

The essays in this second volume of the eighth issue of The Bulletin of Ecclesial Theology are drawn from papers read at theological symposia during 2019 and 2020 hosted by the Center for Pastor Theologians in Chicago, Illinois. These meetings brought together clergy from various denominational backgrounds within the evangelical tradition to explore the contemporary theological and ecclesial implications of forgiveness and its relationship to the field of positive psychology. Essay contributors in this issue include Nathan Chang, Michael LeFebvre, Joey Sherrard, Jeremy Treat, Gerald Hiestand, and Zach Wagner. Book reviews in this issue relate to various theological and biblical topics extending beyond the thematic focus of the essays themselves.

Politics and the Way of Jesus: A Kingdom Perspective

Politics is an allegiance-grabbing force that dominates our culture and demands primacy in our lives. More than ever, followers of Jesus need to understand God’s perspective on the important roles of politics and government while being clear on who has the ultimate authority in our lives. This short, clear book unpacks how Christians can find in Scripture the wisdom and guidance crucial to navigating this political age.

Seek First: How the Kingdom of God Changes Everything

In an age of distraction, everyone is looking for something that gives purpose and perspective on life. Jesus says it’s the kingdom of God. But the kingdom is not just another religious idea. Rather, God’s loving reign brings clarity and coherence to all of life – identity, work, play, relationships, justice, and character – in a way that is profound and practical. Seek First brings theology to the streets, giving a vision for the kingdom that will truly change your life.

Suffering & Glory: Meditations for Holy Week and Easter

Suffering & Glory recovers some of the best Holy Week and Easter articles from half a century of Christianity Today. Guiding readers from Palm Sunday to Pentecost and including contributions from Jeremy Treat, Tish Harrison Warren, J. I. Packer, Nancy Guthrie, and Eugene Peterson, Suffering & Glory will remind readers of the beauty of Christ’s death and resurrection.

The Atonement: An Introduction (Short Studies in Systematic Theology)

The atonement is central to Christian theology and essential for following Jesus. In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, pastor Jeremy Treat explains what Scripture teaches about the atonement and how it impacts one’s daily life. Treat demonstrates that the death of Christ is a multi-dimensional work within the story of the kingdom of God. While the accomplishments of the cross are unending (including forgiveness, victory, and renewal), the heart of the cross is substitution―Jesus dying on behalf of sinners. Christ’s atoning work reconciles believers to God and to one another, calling them to a life of obedience.

The Crucified King: Atonement and Kingdom in Biblical and Systematic Theology

In The Crucified King, Jeremy Treat demonstrates that Scripture presents a mutually enriching relationship between the kingdom and atonement that draws significantly from the story of Israel and culminates in the crucifixion of Christ the king. As Israel’s messiah, he holds together the kingdom and the cross by bringing God’s reign on earth through his atoning death. The kingdom is the ultimate goal of the cross, and the cross is the means by which the kingdom comes. Jesus’ death is not the failure of his messianic ministry, nor simply the prelude to his royal glory, but is the apex of his kingdom mission. The cross is the throne from which he rules and establishes his kingdom.
